Conserva Aves, a joint initiative of American Bird Conservancy (ABC), National Audubon Society (Audubon), BirdLife International (BirdLife), and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC), with financial support from the Bezos Earth Fund, announced the organizations selected for its first open call in Peru. After a rigorous evaluation of 21 applications and the pre-selection of 9 projects, 7 organizations were selected for their commitment to the conservation of birds and their habitats in different regions of the country.

In its first call for proposals, the Conserva Aves Initiative in Peru announced the 7 selected organizations that submitted proposals with innovative approaches to bird conservation, from the creation of subnational protected areas to the implementation of nature-based solutions and community participation.
The selected projects aim to conserve endangered species and their habitats, working closely with local communities, authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of the areas.
The organizations selected to implement the Conserva Aves Initiative in Peru are:
Red de Conservación Voluntaria de Amazonas (RED AMA): is the largest Voluntary Conservation Network in the Amazon region of Peru, made up of 16 individual and community Voluntary Conservation Initiatives (ACP) in the Amazon region, which promote and coordinate activities to work together as a large team to improve their environmental management.
The selected project “Creation and expansion of private conservation areas within the areas that make up the AMA Network in the tropical Andes of northern Peru”, and will have a funding: $149,483 located in Amazonas. It is expected to achieve the expansion of 6,000 hectares through the expansion of ACP Bosque de Palmeras – Molinopampa and ACP Bosque Berlín, as well as the reaccreditation and expansion of ACP Milpuj that are part of the AMA Network, these 3 ACP are located in the department of Amazonas, which is part of the Tropical Andes of northern Peru. This project aims to conserve approximately 6,000 hectares and minimize the impacts of deforestation and environmental and climate risks, working with the surrounding population, local communities, authorities and other stakeholders.
YUNKAWASI: is an organization founded in 2007 that works with Amazonian and Andean communities to learn about their natural resources and provide them with technical support on how to use and conserve them.
The selected project, “Participatory Conservation of the Tropical Andes in the Department of Junín – Peru”, has a funding of $150,000 and is located in Junín. Its objective is to create a Regional Conservation Area (RCA) in the Pucutá Mountain Range (Junín), covering 52,703.66 hectares. The goal is to protect ecosystems and environmental services, as well as to conserve various endemic bird species for the benefit of local communities. Conserva Aves will finance complementary activities to those funded by Rainforest Trust, ensuring a strategic alliance for conservation.
Consorcio Manglares del Noroeste del Perú (CONMANOPE): is a social organization founded in 2015, composed of six local associations of workers specialized in the management and harvesting of hydrobiological resources. For more than three decades, they have been committed to the conservation of the mangrove ecosystem and the sustainable use of its main resources, as well as the management of the Los Manglares de Tumbes National Reserve.
The selected project “Creation of the Regional Conservation Area (RCA) Manglares de Los Tumpis” with a funding of $150,000 is located in Tumbes. CONMANOPE will contribute to the recovery and restoration of the mangrove ecosystem of Tumbes through the creation of a Regional Conservation Area, which will strengthen integrated management aimed at consolidating the mangrove ecosystem as an integrated management unit in the Coastal Marine Management Plan of Tumbes. This project is expected to protect and conserve 5,000 hectares.
Asociación ANDINUS:is a non-profit association that aims to promote the development of activities aimed at knowledge generation, environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources.
The selected project “Creation of the Private Conservation Area Caña – Huata“, which has a funding of $90,000.00, is located in Junín. Its objective is focused on the conservation of biodiversity of native species of the high Andean ecosystems, through the creation of a private conservation area of almost 2,000 hectares. Through the Bird Conservation Initiative, endemic and migratory birds in danger of extinction or endangered species will be protected, such as the Black-eyed Scrub-Hawk (Atlapetes melanopsis), the Black-cheeked Woodpecker (Anairetes alpinus), the Spectacled Woodpecker (Asthenes palpebralis), the Oxapampa Tororoí (Grallaria centralis), or the Junín Tororoí (Grallaria obscura).
Instituto de Desarrollo y Medio Ambiente (IDMA): is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, founded on March 13, 1984, with the purpose of contributing from the local and regional level to the national development; to the achievement of a sustainable development model that allows the improvement and increase of the conditions and quality of human life, the democratization of society, social and gender equity, from an environmental perspective.
The selected project “Protection of ecosystems for the survival of endangered wild birds in the headwaters of the Mariño micro-watershed: Proposal for the creation of the Rontoccocha RCA” has a funding of $100,000 and is located in Apurimac. IDMA seeks to protect the ecosystems for the survival of threatened birds in the Mariño micro-watershed through the proposed creation of the Rontoccocha Regional Conservation Area, which will cover 22,000 hectares, with the objective of reducing anthropogenic pressure and protecting biodiversity habitat.
Huarango Nature (HN): it is a Peruvian nonprofit organization founded in 2017 as a legacy of several conservation projects initiated in Peru since 2001, focusing on the conservation, propagation and restoration of native species in the Peruvian coast and Andes.
The selected project, “Community-based biodiversity conservation: protecting threatened species in a dry forest corridor in northern Peru” will receive $129,420 in funding and is located in Lambayeque. Huarango Nature focuses on conserving patches of mountain dry forest as habitat for threatened bird species and ensuring their permanence over time. It proposes the creation of a 4,000-hectare private conservation area that will serve as a biological corridor and focus on research, participatory management, and financial sustainability.
Asociación ProPurús: is a Peruvian nonprofit organization founded in September 2010 that has worked for more than a decade to conserve the forests, promote the sustainable use of natural resources, and foster the balanced and sustainable development of the indigenous peoples of the Peruvian rainforest.
The selected project is “Private Conservation Area – ACP, for the Conservation of Endangered, Endemic and Declining Migratory Bird Species in the Sawawo Hito 40 and Nueva Bella NPP, Yurua District, Atalaya Province, Ucayali Department“. The project is funded at $148,981 and is located in Ucayali. The project will support the conservation of threatened, endemic and migratory bird species in the upper Yurua River valley, as well as other vulnerable and endangered species, and will protect important habitats in the tropical Andean region of Peru through the creation of two private conservation areas that will protect more than 53,000 hectares.
Conserva Aves represents an important step in the conservation of Peru’s biological diversity and demonstrates the commitment of organizations, communities and local governments to work together.
