The National Meeting of Conserva Aves Peru Partners brought together national and international allies in Urubamba to exchange experiences, strengthen capacities, and generate learning around the creation and expansion of subnational protected areas. The event also included a field visit to the proposed Apu Terijuay Private Conservation Area (ACP), connecting participants with the very ecosystems they aim to protect.

Cusco, April 2025 – Set against the breathtaking landscape of the Sacred Valley, Urubamba hosted a historic milestone for environmental conservation in Peru. From April 8 to 10, the First National Meeting of Conserva Aves Partners took place, creating a space that convened key actors committed to protecting Peru’s biodiversity. This gathering laid the groundwork for a new era in the conservation of subnational protected areas.
Over the course of three intensive days, participants engaged in reflection on:
✓ The main challenges in the creation and expansion of Private Conservation Areas (ACP) and Regional Conservation Areas (ACR).
✓ The sharing of successful community-based conservation experiences
✓ The co-construction of a common agenda for the next two years
Participants agreed that the greatest achievement was the creation of a permanent collaboration network that will:
✓ Optimize technical and financial resources
✓ Replicate best practices across regions
✓ Strengthen political advocacy at the subnational level

Conserva Aves is a regional initiative that seeks to protect critical bird habitats through the establishment and strengthening of protected areas. It is led at the regional level by American Bird Conservancy, National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, Birds Canada, and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC), with funding from the Bezos Earth Fund. In Peru, the initiative is led by Profonanpe, in collaboration with the Andean Ecosystems Association – ECOAN.
