Buteo platypterus, also known as the 'Broad-winged Hawk,' is a migratory species classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
Conserva Aves in Mexico will focus on supporting community-led conservation and promoting inclusion in efforts to protect natural habitats essential for bird life in the country. Through this collaboration, new Voluntary Conservation Areas (VCAs) will be created in priority sites for bird conservation, thus contributing to meeting the 30×30 target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This target seeks to protect 30% of the planet’s land and seas by 2030.
Through this public call for proposals, Conserva Aves will finance proposals aimed at the creation and/or expansion of new VCAs in priority sites for bird conservation. In addition, the capacities of the selected organizations will be strengthened in the following areas:
1. Biological monitoring, support in the process of certifying protected areas and development of a Financial Sustainability Plan with a gender and social inclusion perspective (led by Pronatura Sur A.C.).
2. Institutional, fiscal and legal strengthening, as well as implementation of environmental and social safeguards with a gender perspective and social inclusion (led by FMCN).
The Conserva Aves initiative is led by five organizations: American Bird Conservancy, National Audubon Society (Audubon), BirdLife International (BirdLife), Birds Canada, and the Latin America and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC). Its main goal is the creation, consolidation, management, and strengthening of more than 100 protected areas in nine countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, focused on the conservation of threatened, endemic, and/or migratory priority birds.
Conserva Aves is currently being implemented in four countries in the Tropical Andes (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) with funding from the Bezos Earth Fund. With this call for proposals, its implementation is being extended to Mexico thanks to resources from the Government of Canada.
📅 Deadline to receive proposals:
🗓 Monday, April 7, 2025, before 22:00 hrs (CDMX time).
